The overheads, spot and room mics are much better in Metal Foundry though so if you're trying to move your drums further back in the mix, as in The Satanist by Behemoth, The Ride Majestic by Soilwork or L'Enfant Sauvage you'll have a very hard time making it work.ĭo also take into consideration that as you improve as a mixer you will need every microphone to sound its best in order to make a slamming mix.
Metal Machinery does have what I consider to be better direct shells, as in kicks, snares and toms. Kick: Slate Kick 10 + The Metal Factory Inferno (Free) As for samples to use in Slate Trigger I really enjoy this setup, and it doesn't require you buying any extra samples other than the ones already mentioned. That way you'll have the best of both worlds. My recommendation would be to get SD + Metal Foundry and then later down the line buy Slate Trigger 2 Platinum. The MIDI pack that comes with Metal Foundry also happens to be fantastic. As you can hear the cymbals are definitely still good but they took quite a lot of work compared to Metal Foundry's cymbals, which are practically good to go out of the box. The kick and snare have been replaced with other direct and room samples and everything was mixed outside of Superior. Here's a sound sample of Metal Machinery's cymbals, rooms and toms. There are some good Combined Presets from good producers in the box when you buy Superior but to be honest it was made to be mixed properly in your DAW, not in Superiors own mixer. I do however tend to replace the shells with samples I enjoy more and that aren't used quite as often in the metal community which often leads me to use Metal Foundry.Īs for a good sound right out of the box, the goal of Superior Drummer is to basically give you access to exactly what was recorded, meaning there will be flaws and imperfections which need to be adressed. After owning and using both for several years I've come to the conclusion that I really like the cymbals in Metal Foundry and the shells in Metal Machinery.
